This position is located at CAMP BUTLER - TAIYO GOLF COURSE. Candidates selected for this position will serve as a GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT.

The initial length of this overseas tour for Okinawa, Japan is two (2) years with potential of extending per management's discretion.

JOB TITLE:  GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT  

JOB SERIES:  1601       PAY LEVEL:   NF-04

SUMMARY OF DUTIES: 
Provides the technical expertise to maintain the golf course greens, tees, fairways, roughs, and irrigation system and all related facilities and equipment. Responsible to ensure the attractiveness and constant readiness for play of the course. Determines the appropriate genus of grass to be cultivated for various points of play on the course, based on the nature and condition of the soil, climate, and season of the year.  Ensures the proper functioning of the irrigation systems across the field of play and determines the correct amount of water to be applied to the greens, tees and fairways and related facilities. Oversees and directs the grounds maintenance department who is responsible for irrigation, mowing, fertilization, pesticide application and general upkeep of the golf course grounds. Conducts site assessments to evaluate current environmental management practices, and identify strengths and liabilities. Trains employees regarding the importance of environmental performance and specific techniques for ensuring environmental quality. Directs the amount and types of soil nutriments and fertilizers to be applied to the greens, fairways and roughs.  Takes soil samples regularly throughout the year and reads the results for necessary amendments.  Responsible for the selection, application, storage, and otherwise safe handling of pesticides and other toxic substances.  Ensures compliance with all base, county, state and federal hazardous waste regulations.

Initiates contact with outside agencies, such as the USGA, to invite site visits for consultation at least once per year. Represents the golf course maintenance operations at all golf committee meetings and PMGA and PLGA meetings.  Responsible for renovation and remodeling of the course to include tees, greens, fairways, bunkers, and practice areas.  Recommends architectural changes to the course, seeks advice from Golf Course architectural firms for drawings, scope of work and associated costs.  Responsible for hiring, staffing matters, schedules and leave approval, resolving complaints, initiating disciplinary actions and performance ratings of all maintenance personnel.

Supervises employees to include: assigning and distributing work, coaching, counseling, tutoring, and mentoring employees; approving and disapproving leave, recommending and completing personnel actions, completing performance reviews and signing timecards, training employees, keeping abreast of and actively supporting the principles of the EEO program, and prevention of sexual harassment.  Must be alert to alcohol abuse, and take appropriate action.  

Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner.  Takes action to solve problems quickly.  Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise.  Adheres to safety regulations and standards.  Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.  

Develops and ensures implementation of an activity safety program in accordance with the Base Safety Program.  Conducts safety meetings at least quarterly.  Advises employees of available safety regulations, instructions, materials and equipment.  Promptly reports workplace accidents to the Human Resources Office.  Ensures safety training is provided to employees.  Complies with OSHA standards and takes action to correct unsafe or unhealthy working conditions.  Ensures employees understand safety infractions that can result in disciplinary actions, and follows through with appropriate action.  Ensures minimal loss of duty by complying with 'Return To Work' program initiatives, and following up on employee wellbeing.
