Position Information: The Psychiatrist will provide high-quality psychiatric care to students at the University of California Riverside. This includes evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, and medication management. This position operates within the Student Health Services team and collaborates closely with the Mental Health Initiatives cluster, which include Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), Student Well-being, and Follow up Team (SWIFT), and Case Management, to ensure the integration of psychiatric and counseling care to ensure a holistic and coordinate approach to patient care. This patient population is interesting, highly motivated, and generally very responsible about their psychiatric care. Communicates as necessary with primary care physicians and with outside therapists. Collaborates with Care Coordination regarding hospitalized patients or patients with complicated medical needs. Other supports include robust informational systems, user-friendly electronic medical record system, on-site member services, a quality management team, and expert practice management. The position provides 85% face-to-face clinical time (60 minutes for new intakes, 30 minutes for follow-up visits), 10% allotted for administrative tasks and 5 % allotted for collaboration with the Mental Health Initiatives cluster on student cases, treatment plans, and crisis management support. This position will be hired between 80% to 100% FTE.

The full salary range for the Student Health Psychiatrist is $160,723 - $412,561 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is up to $319,400 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Evaluation & Diagnosis: Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, including clinical interviews, history-taking, and diagnostic tests. Diagnose mental health disorders using the DSM-5 and other relevant diagnostic tools.Collaborate with mental health counselors and psychologists to discuss initial diagnoses and treatment plans for complex cases.
Treatment Plan Coordination & Follow-up: Develop individualized treatment plans in collaboration with students, counseling services, and other healthcare professionals. Design and initiate appropriate evidence-based interventions, which may include medication management, psychotherapy referrals, and other psychiatric treatments.Schedule regular follow-up appointments to assess the effectiveness of treatments, monitor changes in symptoms, and adjust treatment plans as necessary.Maintain communication with students regarding their progress and address any concerns they may have regarding their psychiatric care. Order Lab Test as appropriate.
Medication Management: Prescribe, monitor, and adjust medications as part of treatment for psychiatric disorders, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, ADHD, and bipolar disorder.Regularly review medication regimens to assess effectiveness and address any side effects or concerns. Educate students on the purpose, expected outcomes, potential side effects, and risks of prescribed medications. Provide support for students experiencing difficulties with medication adherence or side effects, working with them to find solutions and adjustments as needed.
Work with counseling staff to coordinate follow-up care, ensuring that students have ongoing support between psychiatric appointments.

Administrative Time Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential records for all patient assessments, treatment plans, prescriptions, and follow-up care in compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory standards. Provide clear, concise progress notes to communicate patient information to other members of the student care team. Prepare reports or summaries on treatment outcomes as requested by SHS or CAPS leadership. Reports to Chief Medical Office (CMO) any issues which may impact patient care and safety and contributes resolution management. When working with CAPS clients, reports to the Counseling Center Director or clinical director all issues which may impact client care and safety and contributes to resolution Management.
Contributes to the establishment of policy regarding psychiatric diagnosis, treatment, referral, confidentiality, release of information to and from outside professional sources, record keeping and any other issues affecting standards of practice for psychiatry. Contributes to review of mental health records according to departmental standards, policies and procedures, quality of care issues and QI studies. Will be actively involved in supporting Chief Physician to attain AAAHC re-accreditation. Within SHS reports to supervisor all issues which may impact patient care and safety and contributes to their resolution. Maintains professional standards of documentation using Electronic Medical Records that are succinct and accurate and completed in a timely fashion. Informed consent is obtained and documented where applicable. Medication allergies and side effects are documented appropriately. Consultation, Collaboration, & Crisis Management Support
Provides psychiatric consultation to SHS clinicians (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants), Mental Health professionals within CAPS and SWIFT (including Licensed mental health therapists, pre-doctoral psychology interns and post-doctoral psychology fellow), and UCR Case Managers.
As a part of a collaborative treatment team and when clinically appropriate, the psychiatrist will be available to consult about students of concern who are also being managed by other departments such as CAPS, SWIFT, and Case Management. Psychiatrist will participate in a coordinated care approach in conjunction with other UCR professionals (e.g. Licensed behavioral health practitioners, case managers [clinical and non-clinical]), when there are complex presentations, psychiatric concerns or emergencies. This may include identification and implementation of case management strategies, situation assessment and management (e.g., aberrant behavior), facilitation of care and appropriate disposition is emphasized. When requested, will provide psychiatric consultation and support in development of intervention and treatment planning during mental health crises, including emergency assessments.
In collaboration with the Health Education Office (The Well), offer psycho-education and information to students about mental health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies. Provide resources for self-care, stress management, and resilience-building in a college setting. When appropriate and in collaboration with Mental Health Initiative Cluster, participate in wellness initiatives, workshops, and other outreach efforts to educate the student body on mental health topics.
