Arts & Sciences is seeking the next Associate Dean for Student Academic Life (AD-SAL). A member of the Colleges leadership team, the AD-SAL reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS). The AD-SAL provides leadership and oversight over all aspects of undergraduate student services, academic support, and co-curricular programming in the College with the goal of supporting student development and success. The AD-SAL oversees the CAS Advising Center, the Pre-professional Advising Center, the Office of Programs and Student Leadership, academic misconduct procedures, and provides coordination and leadership for academic advisors based in the academic departments. The AD-SAL also serves as the representative of CAS and as the liaison to the central administration and other BU schools and colleges.
The AD-SAL is responsible for:
Advising and Academic Support:
AD-SAL directly oversees academic advising/services provided by the CAS Advising Center and collaborates with academic departments and interdisciplinary academic programs to ensure that department-based and program-based advisors deliver quality advising and services.
Works with relevant campus resources (i.e., Career Services, Newbury Center, Educational Resource Center) to promote student success.
The AD-SAL is the final arbiter for petitions for exceptions to policy, particularly as regards graduation requirements.
Counseling, Crisis Management, Advocacy:
Works with students and often families who are facing significant obstacles to completing their degrees in a timely fashion.
Collaborates with Financial Aid, Dean of Students Office, and Counseling and Psychiatric Services to support students.
Academic Standards, Conduct, Records: AD-SAL oversees matters related to academic standards and conduct; works with the Academic Standards Committee on students not meeting standards and works with the Academic Conduct Committee.
Ensures accurate student records, is the chief point-person for working with parents and is the FERPA liaison in the College.
General Leadership and Administration:
AD-SAL works with the Dean of the College, the rest of the leadership team of the College, central administration, departments, and counterparts in other BU schools and colleges to develop and implement relevant student academic life policies and integrate these functions with other aspects of undergraduate education, student life, and student services functions.
The AD-SAL serves on committees relevant to these functions.
Programs and Student Leadership:
AD-SAL works with the Director of the Office of Programs and Student Leadership to provide programs and events to enhance the quality of the academic and co-curricular experiences of undergraduates.
Student Recruitment and Orientation, Scholarship Programs:
The ADSAL represents the Colleges undergraduate mission at orientations and visit programs; collaborates on Spring Open Houses; and meets prospective students and families as needed.
The ADSAL ensures accurate, effective recruitment materials and oversees or partners on college-based scholar and scholarship programs.
Management:
Supervise, recruit, mentor, and support career development for advisors and student support staff, includes four direct reports and a total team of twenty-four.
Required Skills
Minimum of ten years of management experience in undergraduate academic advising, student services, or student success initiatives within a higher education setting.
Demonstrated leadership experience managing teams, supervising professional staff, and overseeing complex administrative operations.
Strong knowledge of developing and maintaining academic policies, academic standards processes, and student conduct procedures, including experience working with committees or governance structures.
Familiarity with FERPA regulations and experience serving as a liaison for student records and privacy matters.
Proven ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, academic departments, and central administrative units.
Demonstrated experience supporting students in crisis.
Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make informed decisions on petitions, exceptions, and academic policy matters.
Excellent communication skills, including presentation skills and the ability to engage confidently with students, families, faculty, and senior administrators.
Tact, composure, and discretion in dealing with sensitive and urgent matters.
Demonstrated commitment to establishing and maintaining an inviting and inclusive environment and supporting the success of students from a wide range of backgrounds.
Master's Degree, preferably in in higher education administration, student affairs, counseling, or a related field.
